birmingham: city of trees
It's said that Birmingham has the highest density of trees per acre than any other European city. Whether urban myth or fact, the city undoubtedly is very green and, were its strapline "city of trees" rather than the naff "England's second city" or today's PR-speak "global city, local heart", its reputation would be very different.
It's proved impossible to find out approximately how many trees the city has. The Council reports it tends 94,000 street trees which must be a small fraction of the total number, as far more are in the city's parks and gardens and around the reservoirs which dot the city.
The Civic Society has recently set up a new project, Trees for Life.
