peregrines and BT Tower
The BT Tower, where roosting peregrine falcons gather as well as electronic engineers and other humans, is (at the time of writing, April 2009) the tallest building in the city.
The 26 storeys of the 1966-Tower make an excellent nesting site. "To a peregrine, a tall building such as an office block or church offers the same benefits as a cliff face – it is high, safe from danger, and the surrounding areas offer ample prey," the RSPB says.
In its time, the design of the BT Tower was remarkable. A stable platform is needed for a microwave beam to stay straight and level to hit the dish at the far end. To achieve this, there are channels at each corner of the building to funnel the wind so counteract the force of it swaying the building.
NOTE: Two nesting boxes were built by the constructors of Fort Dunlop and in early 2009, peregrine falcons were sighted there.
